Those who want their rhythm game fix after completing Rhythm Heaven Groove might find Step Theater up their alley. Developed by Japanese streamer P-P, who famously quit his day job to fully commit to creating the game, and published by NB Games, this story-based rhythm title’s world and story evolve the better you time your moves to the beat. A free demo featuring two stages has been released on Steam.
Step Theater’s stages take the form of short movies depicting various genres and situations, ranging from a tortoise and hare pounding mochi to a creepy vampire ballroom party. As you progress through each stage, the visuals, music, and inputs change and become more intense, signaling developments in the story. While some stages follow classic rhythm-game-style backgrounds and gameplay mechanics, others draw inspiration from different video game genres, with one in particular resembling a platformer.
The demo includes two playable stages: The Two Mochiya (which features the aforementioned tortoise and hair) and The Apprentice Ghost (which stars a young ghost who must time their scares to the countdowns of their teacher). Both stages can be completed in roughly 20 minutes.
Originally set to release this summer for Windows and macOS (Steam), Step Theater has been postponed to sometime in 2026. A free demo is available.
