Psychological horror game One-Time Trigger tasks you with examining patients of a special care facility to expose a hidden doppelganger

A demo is available now on Steam.

Horror fans fond of movies like John Carpenter’s The Thing might want to check out One-Time Trigger, a first-person psychological horror game that tasks you with identifying and killing a doppelganger hiding among patients in the special care facility Providence. Developed and published by indie developer Ruren Studio, the game is set to release in 2027, with a demo out on Steam.

The doppelganger always starts by mimicking the appearance, memories, and behavior of one patient. To prevent it from spreading its influence to the other six patients and the rest of the facility, you have to enter the care rooms of each patient, whereupon you will talk with them, investigate your surroundings, and collect clues.

Some rooms require you to obtain special items to unlock them, while others have special rules that must be followed unless you want a game over. The rooms themselves are unique and reflect each inhabitant’s conditions, with one room bathed in abnormal lighting and another room featuring whispering sounds. The seven patients also each have their own symptoms, physical characteristics, and habits.

With the data you gather, you compare patient testimonies, observe changes in the environment, and check how certain items react to different stimuli (the doppelganger can also copy everyday objects).

Once you think you’ve found out who or what the doppelganger is posing as, you can retrieve your revolver to shoot the target. Your gun only has one bullet, however, and shooting the wrong target leads to an immediate game over. Failing to eliminate the doppelganger before the in-game timer runs out also results in a game over, adding an extra layer of tension.

One-Time Trigger is set to release in 2027 for Windows (Steam). A free demo is also available.
