Toho completes digitization of all 30 Japan-produced Godzilla films

Toho's Godzilla Theater project commemorates 70 years of the iconic franchise.

As part of the Godzilla Theater project, which commemorates 70 years of the massive kaiju, Japanese entertainment company Toho announced that four classic films, namely Godzilla vs. Megaguirus, Godzilla, Mothra and King Ghidorah: Giant Monsters All-Out Attack, Godzilla vs. Mechagodzilla, and Godzilla: Tokyo S.O.S. will be screening for a limited time at select Toho cinemas across Japan from May to August (source: AV Watch). With the completion of the Millennium series, all 30 domestically-produced Godzilla films have been digitally remastered into 4K.

While 4K DCPs will be used for the digital remasters, the resolutions for the Japan screenings may vary depending on the capabilities of the cinema (Toho Cinemas Akaike, for instance, will screen its Godzilla films in 2K).

The Godzilla Theater features a curated selection of classic Godzilla movies that have been remastered for modern audiences. Though the project was launched in 2024 (the year of Godzilla’s actual 70th anniversary), its popularity has allowed it to extend well into 2026.
