On September 27, Square Enix has announced that the original Japanese font of Legend of Mana is now available in the remastered version of the game, with the latest ver 1.1.0 update.

This font update was first announced in June, shortly after the game’s release (see related article in Japanese). And now, three months after the initial launch, Koji Tsuda’s hand-crafted font is finally back. Again, the patch note specifically mentions that the newly added pixel art font is for the Japanese language only. If you are playing in Japanese, you can choose it from the font selection in the options menu. The old-school font will surely bring back some nostalgic vibe.

Actually, a third font option has also been added to the game. The new font is simply called “arranged” in Japanese. It is a thin-looking font that is easy to read and quite elegant. All of a sudden, Japanese players can now choose from not two but three font options. It might be fun to switch between the three fonts and compare them as you play.
[UPDATE 2021/09/27 23:10 JST] fixed the font description in the paragraph above.

Other than the addition of fonts, a small improvement was made to the icon display while Encounter Off or the 2P mode is on. To be more specific, mode icons will now display for a few seconds after moving to a new location, making it easier to check which mode is on. Minor bug fixes were applied as well, so this might be a good opportunity to jump into the game, even for players who have already finished it.

Legend of Mana is an action RPG originally released for PlayStation in July 1999 (JP version). The game features a unique Land Make system in which players can place objects such as towns and dungeons to create their own world map. Legend of Mana comes with a battle system different from the previous titles in the series, and it is also known for its warm, picture-book-esque world.

The remastered version of Legend of Mana is currently available on PC (via Steam), PS4, and Nintendo Switch. The HD remastered version is made in higher resolution and introduces new features such as the ability to save almost anywhere, and the aforementioned “encounters off” mode. The soundtrack includes music arranged by the original composer Yoko Shimomura.
