Wright Flyer Studios will release the command-based time-travel JRPG Another Eden Begins on September 17 for PC (Steam), Nintendo Switch, and Nintendo Switch 2. A free demo is available across both platforms.
As the release draws near, producer Shinnosuke Hirasawa says he believes JRPG fans – especially those fond of Chrono Trigger – should find plenty to enjoy in this upcoming title, thanks in large part to the involvement of scenario writer Masato Kato, who is known for his work on the beloved Square RPG.
Another Eden Begins is a new console RPG based on Part 1 of the main story of “Another Eden: The Cat Beyond Time and Space,” Wright Flyer Studios’ long-running gacha RPG. While it follows the same narrative, the new title has been rebuilt in a new engine, with gameplay redesigned to befit a console RPG experience.
Kato, who wrote the scenarios for both Chrono Trigger and Chrono Cross, is also involved with Another Eden. According to Hirasawa, his influence can be felt strongly throughout both the original game and the new Another Eden Begins.
“In reality, I think both Another Eden and Another Eden Begins have a lot of Kato’s signature style in them – both his complexity and his depth. He’s a through and through creator who genuinely loves making things, and I respect him immensely,” Hirasawa said.
The connection to Chrono Trigger is especially prominent given Another Eden’s time-travel setting. The game’s narrative follows protagonist Aldo as he travels across different eras, including the present (AD 300), future (AD 1100), and ancient past (BC 20,000) in search of his kidnapped sister Feinne. Hirasawa acknowledged that the game’s association with Chrono Trigger is something the team hears about frequently, given Kato’s history with the series.

That being said, Another Eden Begins isn’t intended to reproduce the original mobile game’s story 1:1. While it’s based on Part 1 of Another Eden’s main scenario, the developers say they have snuck in a significant number of behind-the-scenes connections for players of the original game to discover, including a second playthrough in which the story unfolds differently. Hirasawa explained that players may find themselves wondering which version or timeline of Aldo they are actually following.
In this sense, Another Eden Begins is positioned as another work within the same universe – meant to expand the IP into the console game market while offering something new even to existing fans. And for players who have never touched Another Eden, the connection to Kato’s previous work could provide an appealing entry point. Hirasawa said the game was designed to be approachable even for people who haven’t played many JRPGs, while retaining the more substantial storytelling associated with the series and game loop characteristic of the genre.
“It’s a game where the scenario by Masato Kato, who has worked on numerous classic RPGs since the Super Famicom era, is brought to life with the same passion in a modern environment,” Hirasawa said.
