Unicorn Overlord: No plans for DLC or PC port yet, according to producer

Atlus and Vanillaware’s SRPG Unicorn Overlord launched to high acclaim,  exceeding the developers’ expectations in terms of sales. However, it seems there are currently no plans to develop the title further with DLC, or to release a PC port. This was conveyed by Unicorn Overlord’s producer Akiyasu Yamamoto (who is affiliated with Atlus) in a recent interview with GamerBraves.

Unicorn Overlord launched on March 8 for the Nintendo Switch, PS5/PS4 and Xbox Series X|S. On April 1, it was revealed that the game had topped 500k shipments and digital sales worldwide, enjoying great popularity. Speaking to GamerBraves, Yamamoto mentioned that Unicorn Overlord’s development started in earnest around 2016, and was therefore initially intended only for the PS4 and PS Vita. But as the industry changed during the following 8 years and new consoles appeared on the market, Atlus requested a simultaneous worldwide release for the Nintendo Switch, PS5/PS4 and Xbox Series X|S, which Vanillaware accommodated. However, Yamamoto also added, “Unfortunately, we currently have no plans to port Unicorn Overlord to PC.”

This is consistent with Yamamoto’s past comment to Destructoid, where he implied that Atlus is interested in bringing the game to PC, but that their agreement with Vanillaware does not entail this.

While Atlus’s recent entries to the Persona and Shin Megami Tensei series are compatible with the PC, their joint titles with Vanillaware, such as 13 Sentinels: Aegis Rim, are not, implying a possible studio policy.

Also, Yamamoto said there are currently no plans for future DLC for Unicorn Overlord. As mentioned previously, development of Unicorn Overlord started in 2016, and it was conceived as a concept back in 2014 (source: Famitsu). With this in mind, the game’s content has likely been refined thoroughly during the past decade, which could be why the developers are not keen on making further additions.

Unicorn Overlord is available for the PS4/PS5, Xbox Series X|S and Nintendo Switch.

  1. Sad news. I do think Atlus is leaving a lot of money on the table when they decide to not port games to PC. Vanillaware has great titles overall and even if i disagree with the localization of Unicorn Overlord being good, i do think more people should be able to access these titles as a whole or if there is a reason to delay to work on PC, they should at least try to add features to the PC version and make it feel more complete for those that are waiting on it. Maybe someday Atlus will change their mind on PC we can see more of their older titles from SMT even the spinoff series like Raidou, DDS and Soul Hackers.
