RPG Maker developers add 3D background support to no-coding dev tool Action Game Maker, allowing development of “2.5D style” games

Action Game Maker's one-year-anniversary update has added 3D environment support and custom action plugins.

Gotcha Gotcha Games, known for the RPG Maker series, released a major update to its game development tool ACTION GAME MAKER on June 17. Commemorating the title’s 1-year anniversary, the new version 1.3.0 adds support for 3D backgrounds, allowing development of 2.5-style games.

Initially released in 2025 on Steam, Action Game Maker is a successor to Pixel Game Maker MV, designed to allow even creators without knowledge of programming to develop 2D games such as platformers, action RPGs and schmups. The program is based on the open-source game engine Godot, allowing access to all of its 2D features. While it fully supports standard GDScript coding, Action Game Maker also uses a node-based visual scripting language created specifically for non-programmers. Beyond Godot features, the dev tool also comes with RPG Maker-like features such as a database system, scene transition tools, 2D bone animations, and graphical and audio asset libraries.

With the latest update, users can load 3D models as environments for their games, a feature that has been long requested. It’s worth noting that the 3D content exists separately from the 2D gameplay space, however, it can operate as a parallax background synchronized with 2D gameplay elements, such as following the movement of the 2D camera. A manual on how the new feature works is available on RPG Maker Guild

Another big addition to Action Game Maker is the arrival of custom action plugins, inspired by the plugin ecosystem used by the RPG Maker series. This feature allows users to create original Conditions and Actions using GDScript. Further details on the update and Action Game Maker’s future roadmap can be found in Producer Letter #19 on the Steam store page.
