Acacia, the Japanese indie studio behind the massively popular Magical Girl Witch Trials, recently launched the Steam store page for its new horror visual novel, Magical Girl: Taboo Village. While the game is, at the very least, partially related to Magical Girl Witch Trials (it has been confirmed that Hiro Nikaido, one of the 13 prisoners from Acacia’s previous title, will be making an appearance), it seems like Magical Girl: Taboo Village will follow a brand-new protagonist, with the story’s setting inspired by Japanese-styled folk-horror. The title is set to release sometime later this year.
Magical Girl: Taboo Village follows Sakuya Watanuki, a girl with a flower blooming from one eye who awakens in an old shrine with nine other girls in the same predicament as her. Near them hangs the corpse of a girl who has flowers blooming from every part of her body. The girls are greeted by Yumemi, a caretaker who reveals that the ten of them are magical girls chosen to take part in the Flower Offering Ritual, where one girl will be hanged every night at 8 PM as a sacrifice to the Kamibana.

Unable to stand idle as they wait for their deaths, Sakuya and the other girls explore the village they are trapped in to uncover its customs and secrets. Along the way, they discover the truth about the Flower Offering Ritual, the Kamibana, and each other. According to its Steam store page, Magical Girl: Taboo Village will feature “perspective shifts” revealing different sides of the whole “multifaceted” story.
While Magical Girl Witch Trials fans have yet to receive an English localization, Acacia is aiming to provide English support for Magical Girl: Taboo Village “as close to the Japanese release as possible” while making sure to preserve the quality narrative experience. Given how Witch Trials currently has an “Overwhelmingly Positive” reception on Steam, anticipation for this new title seems to be just as high.
Magical Girl: Taboo Village is set to release in 2026 for PC (Steam).
