Menhera Maiden, the debut title from indie developer MOONHERA, was revealed on April 25 with the simultaneous release of a trailer alongside the game’s Steam store page.
Described as a “Landmine x Yuri visual novel,” the game is played from the perspective of a foreign university student and self-described otaku studying abroad in Japan. Coincidentally, the protagonist chooses to write her master’s thesis on Yami Kawaii (“sickly cute”) subculture and jirai-kei (landmine-type) girls in particular. With 62 days left until her deadline and nothing to show for it, she is forced to dive headfirst into the world of menhera (trendy yet mentally unstable) young women to collect hands-on research material in the hopes of completing her thesis in time.
The player will encounter three different girls, each of whom represents a different facet of the jirai-kei archetype. Although the details of their personalities and even their names have yet to be revealed, each of them represents a different possible branch for the story to follow.

The gameplay system is described as a traditional visual novel, with players advancing through the text-based narrative while making decisions to influence the outcome of the story. The player’s choices are said to have an effect not only on their relationships with the three main girls, but also the form the protagonist’s thesis ultimately takes.

While not much has been revealed yet about the details of the game’s plot or its characters, the developer has created an X account where they will presumably share updates on the game as it gets closer to its release.

With games like Needy Streamer Overload and Yunyun Syndrome!? Rhythm Psychosis having proved that yami kawaii aesthetics (in a broader sense) offer fertile ground for unhinged game narratives that disturb the comfortable and comfort the disturbed, Menhera Maiden appears to be blending those influences with yuri romance to offer its own take on this nascent indie subgenre.
Menhera Maiden is slated for release on PC (via Steam) sometime later in 2026. According to the Store page, English language support will not be available at launch.
