Pokémon Unite’s alluring Mew holowear stuns fans all over again

Pokémon Unite’s official Japanese X account posted a new color variant costume for Mew on February 9. The post has generated a large amount of attention for an unexpected reason and made people see the psychic-type mythical Pokémon in a whole new light.

Pokémon Unite is a free-to-play Multiplayer Online Battle Area game. Each player controls their own group of Pokémon and engages in 5-on-5 team battles against other players. The game also features holowear, which are costume items that can be obtained in exchange for holowear tickets purchased from the in-game shop or dropped from Battle Pass Prize Boxes or Energy Rewards. Holowear allows you to kit your Pokémon out in unusual outfits. For example, you can dress Slowbro up in a tuxedo, have Gengar in a masked wrestler guise or even make Blastoise into a firefighter.

The new Mew look that has grabbed players’ attention is a dark blue version of the “Fashionable Style: Mew” holowear. Like the previously released light blue version, the long dress, fur stole and jeweled ribbon at the neck give Mew a very noble and feminine appearance.

Both the Japanese and English announcement posts on Pokémon Unite’s official X account received a lot of reactions and comments. The Japanese post in particular blew up with 1 million views and 3.8k reposts. Japanese commenters not only expressed surprise at Mew looking girly and cute but also some jokingly mentioned the unexpected sexiness of the outfit. Others mused whether this means that Mew is a girl.

The English language post featured various comments calling the outfit cute and ballerina-like. There were also some jokey Valentine’s Day references as well as some people comparing the holowear to Mew’s very different appearance in the anime.

Pokémon Unite’s official X account often announces new holowears but the original version of Mew’s “Fashionable Style: Mew” posted last February and the new version posted this month have attracted a lot of attention. Mew has never been seen in a dress before in either the games or the anime, and users seemed to be surprised at how well these cute clothes unexpectedly suit the Pokémon. After all, Mew is more human-looking than many other Pokémon, and this sweet princess-like dress is a good match for its mischievous nature.

Pokémon Unite is free to play on Nintendo Switch, iOS and Android.
