Japanese video game company Visual Arts, best known for operating the Key visual novel brand, announced on October 19 that Jun Maeda has been diagnosed with pharyngeal cancer.
Jun Maeda is one of the co-founders of Key and has worked on planning, screenwriting and music for many of its works, including hit titles like Kanon, Air, Clannad, and Little Busters, and is often credited as the force behind the brand’s rise to success. Most recently, he created and composed the soundtrack for Summer Pockets, and has also been working on the free-to-play RPG Heaven Burns Red.
According to the announcement, since early spring of 2026 Maeda had been experiencing discomfort in his throat, with symptoms worsening in the next following months. He was subsequently diagnosed with pharyngeal cancer. Apparently, after careful consideration of his current condition and treatment outlooks, Maeda has chosen to pursue palliative care instead of active treatment in order to devote himself to his creative work.
When it comes to his future creative activities, Maeda has completed his portions of the main story for Heaven Burns Red up until the first half of Chapter 6, as well as all the main story beats throughout the end of the same chapter. He has also completed the music featured in the first half of Chapter 6. His further participation in the project will depend on the progression of his illness.
Additionally, Maeda had planned to launch a new long-term original music project on YouTube. However, following the diagnosis, Maeda has decided to focus on completing songs currently in development, and deliver them to fans quickly as possible. At his strong request, the music will be released on YouTube going forward.
Maeda is currently hospitalized, but has expressed a strong determination to devote himself to creative work. If you would like to send a message or letter of encouragement to Jun Maeda, you can do so via the address provided in the official announcement.
