Does pineapple belong on pizza or not? This Japanese board game is about battling it out

Pineapple vs Salami is a board game concept by Marina Fujiwara, a Japanese artist specializing in the creation “useless inventions.” Since its grand reveal, the board game has successfully reignited the eternal “pineapple on pizza” debate.

Post translation: I made a board game in which a person who wants to put pineapple on a pizza and a person who wants to stop them battle it out

On February 7, Marina Fujiwara shared a video introducing her latest project – the Pineapple vs Salami board game. It is played on a very realistic and delicious looking pizza board, which seems to depict a traditional Italian margherita. In the center of the pizza is a squared grid, in which players can put either pineapple or salami slices until the pizza is fully covered in toppings. To demonstrate, Fujiwara plays on her own, leading team pineapple to an overwhelming victory. In a following post she states, “I want to put pineapple in all dishes.”

Although obviously intended as a piece of light-hearted conceptual art, many users expressed the desire to actually play a real Pineapple vs Salami board game. While New Yorkers and Italians getting heated up over pizza puritanism is expected, there’s surprisingly a strong polarization among Japanese users too when it comes to the controversial combination of pineapple and pizza.
