Pokémon Scarlet and Violet: Tera Raid’s weird glitch results in egg battles

Coinciding with the release of the Version 1.2.0 update for Pokémon Scarlet and Violet, a new Tera Raid Battle event has been added to the games, featuring the Paradox Pokémon Walking Wake and Iron Leaves. However, challenging the raid without updating the game to Ver 1.2.0 results in a strange bug that causes an egg to appear as the raid opponent instead of the Paradox Pokémon.

Players have speculated about why something like this would occur. If Walking Wake and Iron Leaves are new Pokémon being added in the update, then it would make sense that their model data wouldn’t exist in a previous version of the game. Thus, players suspect that any Pokémon that cannot be displayed will be replaced by an egg. Incidentally, similar issues have occurred in past titles in the series, where bugs or game data modifications have caused eggs that don’t hatch to appear.

This is neither Walking Wake or Iron Leaves.
It’s an egg raid!
This is definitely a bug.

Normally, it is only possible to catch one Walking Wake and one Iron Leaves per save file by defeating them in the raid event. However, according to reports from players, anyone who happened to catch the egg from a glitched raid will no longer be able to catch Walking Wake or Iron Leaves even after they update their game to Ver 1.2.0, making this a rather serious issue.

The Pokemon Company is aware of the problem and noted that they will have more information in the coming days for players who have been affected by the bug.

In addition to a variety of bug fixes, Ver 1.2.0 also adds various improvements to the game, like new functionality for Pokémon Boxes. Even if you don’t intend to participate in the new Tera Raid Battle event, it’s probably a good idea to update your game to the latest version.
