Sega has announced 404 GAME RE:SET for iOS and Android in Japan. The game is due out in Spring 2023, and preparations are underway to include multi-lingual support. Sega itself is handling development of the game, with Yoko Taro serving as creative director and illustrator Yuugen in charge of character designs.

404 GAME RE:SET is an RPG where you must fix a world that has been distorted by Sega. The game is set in a world where Sega reigns supreme in all kinds of fields, from entertainment to infrastructure. One day, the protagonist encounters a mysterious existence known as X, who explains that the world is not as it should be. After realizing that Sega is the culprit behind this distorted world, the protagonist wages a battle against the company in an attempt to restore the world to its original form.

The characters in the game, referred to as the “Cast,” are bishoujo personifications of famous video games. Sega titles like OutRun, Virtua Cop, and Virtua Fighter, as well as games from other companies, have been transformed into girls. The girls are beings created from games that have been granted a consciousness and they possess the ability to alter reality. Sega has brainwashed the Cast and uses their abilities to rewrite the world as it sees fit.

Details on the game are still scarce, but in the announcement trailer, Yoko Taro explained, “I thought that people probably wouldn’t want to see Sega create a game where they make themselves look good, so I made them evil.” He then imagined what it would be like if Sega were to go out of control, and created a world based on this delusion.

He further explained that the game’s content is rather unorthodox and said that he would be really happy if the game made everyone think: “Sega made an edgy game that isn’t going to make any money.”
