In commemoration of 22 years since the release of Graffiti Kingdom, game developer Yuichi Tanzawa, who worked on creating the 2004 action RPG title, posted on X talking about the possibility of a third installment to the series.
Graffiti Kingdom is the sequel to 2002’s Magic Pengel: The Quest For Color for the PlayStation2. The main gameplay loop consists of drawing and creating custom monsters, and then using them for combat. While the series managed to secure a decent following in Japan, it never ended up receiving a third entry.
According to Tanzawa’s post, he’s already made numerous proposals for a Graffiti Kingdom sequel over the course of the past 22 years, but none of them ended up getting approved. “I think no one in this world wants to make a new Graffiti Kingdom more than I do. There were several times when the project was super close to getting greenlit, but ultimately, we didn’t have the strength to push through with it, which is why, sadly, a Graffiti Kingdom 3 still hasn’t been released even after 22 years.”
Frustrated after another one of his projects fell through in early 2026, and inspired by many of his friends in the indie scene, Tanzawa decided to take the matters into his own hands and create a spiritual successor to the Graffiti Kingdom franchise himself. He explained that it would be a game “for his own personal enjoyment,” and still hasn’t decided what to ultimately do with it once its completed. Whether he is going to push for an official release, or just leave it as a game for him and his friends to enjoy privately, is still to be determined. Tanzawa even suggests the possibility of working on the game until the end of his life and then releasing it for free posthumously.
In a series of X posts posted throughout this month, Tanzawa showed what looks like prototype footage of the monster creation segment of his upcoming game. While we still don’t know whether and when the final game will be released, it will be interesting to see Tanzawa’s progress developing the game, as it seems that he will be making frequent updates regarding the new title over on his X account.
