From hosting a radio show with a pair of incompetent gyaru DJs, to guitar pedalboard deckbuilding battles: 5 Japanese music and rhythm-based indie games

Japanese indie game showcase dedicated to five upcoming or recently released rhythm or music-themed games.

Welcome to our weekend segment, where we showcase recent or upcoming Japanese indie titles that share a specific theme. This week, we’re covering games that will have you throwing your hands up in the air (or at least bopping your head to the beat). Even if you have two left feet or are tone deaf, there’s bound to be a music-themed title on this list that will have you feeling the rhythm.

Dystopia VS Distortion

Despite the track interface, which gives off the impression that it’s a rhythm game, Dystopia VS Distortion is actually a turn-based pedalboard-building title where you fight battles  using guitar effects. By combining different pedals and adjusting their placements (much like you would in a deck-building game), you create a pedalboard that changes how your guitar sounds and how its attacks behave.

Popular effects like Overdrive, Delay, and Compressor are available, but the developers at My New Games are adding more pedals with effects that are “so insane, you won’t believe your ears.” Effects play from left to right during the battle phase, though you will have to carefully manage your pedalboard space. Larger pedals usually mean bigger damage, but they take up more space and limit your options.

In true punk rock fashion, Dystopia VS Distortion has you fighting machines. After most of humanity abandons its flesh-and-blood bodies in favor of mechanical ones, a rogue central control system causes the machines to turn on the remaining humans. One day, a human girl (that’s you) finds a guitar in the ruins, sparking hope that her world might be saved.

While some artwork in the upcoming demo and Steam page is AI-generated, My New Games plans to replace them with actual human-made assets when the game is released.

Dystopia VS Distortion is currently in development for Windows and macOS (Steam).

MeloMisterio -play your melody-

MeloMisterio -play your melody- is a unique take on the 3D platformer genre where every move you make plays a sound. Each action is mapped to two inputs, with one playing a higher note and the other playing a lower note than the previous one. While you don’t have to be as mindful about which input you press for actions such as jumping or dashing, the more challenging sections (such as activating fences and lifts) will have you switching between high and low notes to progress.

Thankfully, MeloMisterio doesn’t work off a combo-based system where missing a single input can ruin the flow of your entire run. Given that many puzzles require careful thinking just as much as you “feeling the beat,” it’s nice to know that you can take your time before you leap.

Developed by Gentle Giants, MeloMisterio -play your melody- is currently in development for Windows (Steam).

One More Mixxx

You can’t have a music game showcase without at least one classic rhythm title. In a similar vein to Konami’s Beatmania series, One More Mixxx has you scratching your mouse like a turntable to hit the beats as they drop. Though the Steam page description suggests that the full release will feature controller support (as well as console versions), the developers suggest playing with a mouse and keyboard for the full DJ experience.

One More Mixxx even has a story, which follows two girls with zero DJ expertise – a self-pronounced “baka” and a downer gyaru – as they host the One More Mixxx radio show. Developed by Annulus and Holmon, the game is currently in development for Windows and macOS (Steam).

Kimekyawa♥GenkaiBeat-chan!!

Another rhythm game, Kimekyawa♥GenkaiBeat-chan!! is a bit on the delusional side. Beat-chan, a factory female worker, is given the boring job of operating a fruit crushing machine that creates her company’s favorite juice. Things liven up when she enters Wonder Mode, as the fruits turn into cute monsters, which she smashes to the rhythm with her bare hands. Completing levels, as well as crushing fruits and monsters, earns you currency that can be used to buy power-ups, bonuses, and new factory features.

Initially launched in 2024 as a free Unity title by Team Kimekyawa, Kimekyawa♥GenkaiBeat-chan!!’s full release is set for 2026 on Windows and macOS (Steam).

Rizuhuritan! Rhythmic Flip (Re)Turn

Rizuhuritan! Rhythmic Flip (Re)Turn is a relaxing rhythm memory-based game where you assign musical keys to animals and repeat the patterns as they are presented. Sample patterns drop down on the left side of the screen, which you must follow during your turn on the right side.

Featuring seven songs, Rizuhuritan! Rhythmic Flip (Re)Turn can be completed in about 30 minutes. Playtime can be extended with the different difficulty modes, which are unlocked by reaching a certain score with each song. While AI was used for some programming, background images, and translations, all of the songs are original works.

Developed by Toto Aoki, Rizuhuritan! Rhythmic Flip (Re)Turn is available for Windows and macOS (Steam).

Those were five Japanese indies that will get your toes tapping to the tempo. Though most of the titles here are rhythm games, all of them feature fresh ideas that put a unique spin on the genre.
