Nitroplus’s cult 2003 horror visual novel Saya no Uta is getting adapted into a reading drama-style stage play, with performances scheduled to run from June 4, 2026 in Tokyo, Japan. Ahead of the premiere, the organizers have started lifting the veil on commemorative merch that theatergoers will be able to purchase. While the products announced so far have been standard fare, like pin badges featuring Saya and copies of the play’s script adorned in meat-monster art, the latest piece of merch is so comically morbid it has even Saya no Uta’s original director and scenario writer Gen Urobuchi stumped.
As you can see, the item in question is a red T-shirt featuring artwork of Saya, as well as an “organic” design printed on the back. What’s particular about it is the packaging – the T-shirt will be sold in a plastic container reminiscent of tupperware (you know, the kind you store “food” in), with the meat-looking back print perfectly facing the lid. The whole concept is, of course, inspired by a “certain scene in the original game,” and the organizers have very appropriately decided to advertise it using photographs of the container placed inside of a refrigerator.

The reference to Saya no Uta’s infamous fridge scene quickly went viral among Japanese fans, especially after Nitroplus’s Gen Urobuchi quoted the post on X with the comment, “Whoever came up with this has got to be even more unhinged than the original creator??” (the “original creator” being himself, of course). The comment was met with a flurry amused of comebacks from Urobuchi’s Japanese fans saying “Look who’s talking” and “You’re the one who started it all,” so that’s a job well done for the Saya no Uta stage play merch designers.
The viral meat tee is scheduled to go on sale at the stage play’s venue in Tokyo’s Sogetsu Hall. As for the adaptation itself, ten performances are planned spanning from June 4 to June 14, directed by Japanese playwright Kenichi Suemitsu. Ticket availability and other information can be found via the official website.
