Masahiro Sakurai tweets a single syllable, unleashing avalanche of Super Smash Bros. 6 requests

On February 5, Nintendo revealed the date and time for their next Direct broadcast. Kirby and Super Smash Bros. creator Masahiro Sakurai reposted the announcement on X, accompanied by a simple exclamation of surprise. That’s all it took for users’ imaginations to run wild, with comments quickly escalating to speculation about potential new game releases and even character requests.

The upcoming April 2 Nintendo Direct Broadcast is set to reveal more information about the hotly anticipated Switch 2 console. Like many of us, it seems Sakurai was also surprised and excited by the announcement, so he quoted the post with a simple “Ooh!”

Users quickly got overexcited in the comments, with many assuming Sakurai’s message has a deeper meaning. Users suggested that he must be working on Super Smash Bros. 6, and is hinting that the game will be revealed in the upcoming Nintendo Direct. Soon, replies were requesting guest characters for the (as far as we know, non-existent) new Super Smash Bros. game, with picks including Shadow the Hedgehog, Okami, Chai from Hi-Fi Rush, and Sans from Undertale.

Although these comments are just wishful thinking for now, Super Smash Bros. is a major Nintendo series. It has appeared on every Nintendo home console since its debut on N64, so it might come to the Switch 2 at some point. Sakurai has been working on a secret game project since April 2022, so it is easy to see why people are assuming and getting excited.
