In a recent “Happy Sad Confused” podcast, live-action Gundam star Noah Centineo revealed more details about Netflix’s upcoming film adaptation of the popular mecha franchise. Centineo described the story as a “non-Shakespearean Romeo and Juliet” that takes place in the Universal Century timeline.
As the first and primary timeline of the franchise, the Universal Century (U.C.) timeline is the setting for many Gundam works. These include famous entries like the original Mobile Suit Gundam, Zeta Gundam, Char’s Counterattack, and the Hathaway’s flash series among others.
Centineo did not mention when in the timeline Netflix’s live-action Gundam movie takes place, nor did he say which (if any) familiar characters will be making an appearance. However, he reiterated a 2025 Legendary Pictures statement that the plot would revolve around Sydney Sweeney’s character and his character’s relationship as two lovers on opposite sides of an ongoing war, with the opposing sides most likely being the Earth Federation Forces and the Principality of Zeon.
Noah Centineo has made a name for himself starring in roles such as Peter Kavinsky in Netflix’s To All the Boys films. However, gamers and otaku might soon start to recognize him for his work on the Gundam movie and as Ken Masters in the upcoming live-action Street Fighter movie.
Netflix’s live-action Gundam movie is set to release sometime in 2027.
