Tekken 8 community brings recently bereaved player’s question to the attention of Tekken devs
A Tekken 8 player’s query on Reddit regarding how to save the AI Ghost of his brother who suddenly passed away has gone viral. The post reached Tekken 8’s director Kohei Ikeda and producer Katsuhiro Harada, who offered their condolences and a solution to the bereaved player.
The latest entry in the fighting game series, Tekken 8, was released on January 27. The game features a new mode called Super Ghost Battle. Tekken 8 can learn an individual player’s way of playing the game and reproduce it in the form of an AI Ghost. The AI Ghost uses a reinforcement learning method to quickly learn the player’s movements. Apparently, it can accurately reproduce the characteristics of a player’s fighting style, such as their typical movements, behavior patterns and techniques used. AI Ghosts are generated for each character the player uses and it is possible to download other players’ ghosts to fight against them in Super Ghost Battle Mode.
As stated in the Reddit post above, user Melodic_Insect1356 lost his brother suddenly. He asked if there was a way to permanently save their brother’s AI Ghost so he could play against his brother’s imitation sometimes. He was concerned that with Ghosts being stored on the servers, that eventually his brother’s Ghost would be deleted due to inactivity or an update. Redditors responded with many kind comments and were able to bring the post to the attention of Tekken 8’s producer and director, who wrote the following replies on X.
After offering their condolences, both Harada and Ikeda reassured the player that if he downloaded the Ghost data and saved it locally then he could continue to play against it even if the data is deleted from the server.
The original poster thanked Redditers for their messages of support. Apparently, he has also sent the Tekken Team a thank you letter and hopes they see it. Overall, this episode has shown how the kind actions of people on the internet can help someone who is going through a very difficult time.
Tekken 8 is available for the PC (Steam), PS5 and Xbox Series X|S.
