New official Final Fantasy XIV potato chips are floor-lickin’ good?

Square Enix is teaming up with Japanese potato chip manufacturer Koikeya to release a new line of official Final Fantasy XIV “Eorzea Popoto Chips.” But this time, it’s the cheeky flavor name that has amused Japanese fans of the series.

The new flavor is “Yukapero Consommé,” and it promises to be spicy. Yukapero is gamer slang for being unable to fight because you are KO’ed. The expression, which translates literally to “lick the floor,” is often used in esports and online gaming communities. Consommé refers to the type of soup and is common potato chip flavor in Japan.

This is not the first time Square Enix has teamed up with Koikeya to release limited edition FFXIV potato chips. Back in August 2023, they released “Crystal of Light” rock-salt flavored Eorzea Popoto Chips that came in packages featuring different characters from the MMORPG (Source: Siliconera). A popoto is a starchy tuberous vegetable that grows in Eorzea and seems to be FFXIV’s equivalent of potatoes, hence the name.

The new Yukapero flavored potato chips (sorry I meant Popoto chips) will go on sale on Koikeya’s online shop from January 10 at 12:00 JST. They will also be available on the Tokyo leg of the Final Fantasy XIV Fan Festival held from January 7-8, 2024. At the time of writing, there is no information as to whether they will be sold outside Japan.

On a floor-related sidenote, FFXIV seems to have gained a bit of a reputation for its varied and detailed floors, with users even making screenshot collections of all the different styles.

Final Fantasy XIV’s Dawntrail expansion will be released in Summer 2024.
