ゲームの祭典「The Game Awards 2020」の部門別受賞作品・受賞者が12月11日に発表された。ゲーム・オブ・ザ・イヤー（以下、GOTY）の座に輝いたのは、Naughty Dogの『The Last of Us Part II』。同作は最多となる9部門（計10部門）でノミネートされていた。そして投票の結果、「ゲームディレクション」「ナラティブ」「アクション/アドベンチャー」「オーディオデザイン」「アクセシビリティ」「パフォーマンス」と、ノミネートされた部門をほぼすべて制する最多受賞作品（計7部門）となった。アクセシビリティオプションの充実度や、盲目のプレイヤーでもクリアできるよう設計されたオーディオデザインなど（関連記事）、多方面において評価を集める作品となった。
GOTYを含む7部門でノミネートされていた『ゴースト・オブ・ツシマ』は、『The Last of Us Part II』と部門が重なっていたこともあり、通常の投票カテゴリでは結果的に1部門（アートディレクション）のみの受賞に終わった。ただしPlayer’s Voiceという、他とは異なる完全なユーザー投票部門では、最終投票の約半数を集めて勝利をおさめている。投票の途中までは、この部門でも『The Last of Us Part II』に破れるペースであったが、投票終盤に劇的な追い上げをみせて受賞した。

パフォーマンス部門では、『The Last of Us Part II』にてアビーを演じたLaura Bailey氏が受賞。物議を醸したキャラクターということもあり、キャラクターを演じたBailey氏自身に向けて、ユーザーから熾烈なバッシングが寄せられたと、過去のインタビューで語られていた（Kinda Funny Games動画リンク）。今回の受賞スピーチでは、「とても情熱的なレスポンス」を受けたと表現。Bailey氏自身が感銘を受けたという、シリーズ1作目に敬意を表するような演技を目指していたと伝えるとともに、このような役を演じる機会を得られたことを光栄に思うとコメントした。Bailey氏は多数のゲームにて起用されている著名声優/俳優であり、昨年のThe Game Awardsでも『Gears 5』のケイト役でノミネートされていた。
国内タイトルでいうと、楽曲部門とロールプレイングゲーム部門で『ファイナルファンタジーVII リメイク』、ファミリー部門で『あつまれ どうぶつの森』が受賞。今後リリースされる期待の新作部門では、フロム・ソフトウェアの『Elden Ring』が最多票を集めた。旧作ながらも2020年になってから快進撃を見せた『Among Us』は、モバイルゲームとマルチプレイゲーム部門を受賞。ベストデビュー作の部門は、『Among Us』のようにインフルエンサーを中心としたゲーム配信により人気に火がついていった『Phasmophobia』が獲得。コミュニティサポート部門では『Fall Guys: Ultimate Knockout』が受賞しており、ゲーム配信との親和性の高い作品が多く選ばれているのが、今年のThe Game Awardsの特徴といえる。

なおベストインディーゲームおよびベストアクション部門は、今年正式リリースを果たした『Hades』が獲得。同作はGOTYノミネート作品でもあり、こちらも2020年を代表する作品のひとつとなった。社会的メッセージ性があり思考を刺激するタイトルを選出するゲーム・フォー・インパクト部門では、トランスジェンダーの主人公を描く『Tell Me Why』が受賞している。

The Game Awardsの通常カテゴリは、ゲームメディアやインフルエンサーなど95以上の団体がノミネート作品を選出。そこから各審査団体の投票（90％）と一般ユーザー投票（10％）の合計により受賞作品が決まる（公式FAQ）。なお『サイバーパンク2077』は発売日の都合により、今年度のThe Game Awards選定対象外となっている（2021年の同イベントではノミネート対象となりうる）。
