Elden Ring DLC: How to get the “O Mother” gesture and access the Hinterland in Shadow of the Erdtree

While most of the gestures in Elden Ring are cosmetic in nature, some are integral to progressing certain parts of the game. “O Mother” is one of the gestures appearing in the Shadow of the Erdtree DLC and it is a prerequisite for accessing the Hinterland, which leads to the easternmost section of the Land of Shadow. This guide will show you how to get the gesture and, more importantly, where to use it.

Where can you get the “O Mother” gesture?

The “O Mother” gesture is located just north of Bonny Village in the Scadu Atlus Region. From the Moorth Ruins Site of Grace (the one with a Miquella’s Cross and the Dryleaf Dane NPC beside it), head east until you find a ruined cathedral with a door opening. Go through the opening, head all the way down, and you’ll come across a small cave with a lengthy ladder at the end. Climb this ladder and you will emerge in Bonny Village.

After activating the location’s Site of Grace, begin heading out of town by following a series of bridges. The first bridge is broken and can easily be jumped over, but before you cross the longer second bridge, hang a left and head north. A withered tree can be found nearby, as will a headless statue. Interacting with the statue gives you the “O Mother” gesture and a new path through the Shadow Keep. While you’re in this area, you may also want to get the Remembrance Coffin located near the Cathedral of Manus Metyr

Where do you use the “O Mother” gesture?

To access the Hinterland, you must go back and follow the bridges leading out of Bonny Village. There will be a path to follow that leads to an armored Furnace Golem and a tunnel under a hill. Passing through this tunnel will lead you to Shadow Keep, Church District. This area will initially be flooded, but by following the fairly linear path, you will find a lever that drains the water and provides access to more of the Church District. A side path in this area leads to an elevator that will bring you to the back area of the Specimen Storehouse which was previously inaccessible through the front entrance of Shadow Keep. The nearby Storehouse, Back Section Site of Grace will be near the elevator to provide you with a checkpoint.

This upper area of Shadow Keep is filled with ladders, lifts, and holes that lead outside of the keep – all of which you will need to navigate towards a balcony that leads outside with another series of lifts. Unlike the other lifts, these lead downwards, as does the giant elevator found at the bottom of these lifts. Going down the elevator leads to the Shadow Keep, Back Gate Site of Grace, and beside it, a statue of Queen Marika. Using the “O Mother” gesture in front of this statue will cause it to move aside and grant access to the Hinterland.

It is advised that you first activate the Hinterland Site of Grace nearby as two Tree Sentinel bosses can be found blocking your way to the Shaman Village and the Finger Ruins of Dheo. Once they are dealt with, you are free to explore this new area at your leisure.
