“Zero programing required” RPG development tool Bakin gets Live2D support

SmileBoom's RPG Developer Bakin now has a free Live2D ToolKit for importing Live2D models.

In the Ver 2.5 update for SmileBoom’s RPG Developer Bakin tool, which launched on June 17th, one of the key new features was the introduction of support for Live2D character animation, a style of digital animation most associated with VTubers and mobile games like Emberstoria or Azur Lane.

First released in 2025, RPG Developer Bakin is a game development tool designed to allow aspiring game developers to bring their ideas to life with “zero programming required,” according to the tagline. Its features include an elaborate map editor that allows for differences in elevation and unique effects, highly customizable screen designs, support for complex battles and scripted cutscenes, and a plethora of ready-made assets to get new creators started.

The software has seen numerous updates since its launch, such as the addition of enemy parties and even support for crafting systems. Other behind-the-scenes features to allow for things like more efficient debugging have also been added over time.

This latest update enables the importing and use of rigged character models created in Live2D Cubism, the program commonly used for animating Live2D models, for use in games created using RPG Developer Bakin. While Live2D models used by VTubers are typically manipulated in real-time using motion-capture software like VTube Studio, it is also possible to program them with pre-made animations, which is presumably how they are meant to be used in this instance.

The update notes suggest that “By bringing characters to life with Live2D, creators can produce more engaging and memorable experiences that leave a lasting impression on players.” Although it’s entirely up to game developers to decide how they will utilize the potential of this new feature, a quick look at the kind of games many doujin devs have uploaded to Steam using similar tools like RPG Maker should give one an idea of at least a few possibilities.

Bakin’s Ver. 2.5 update also includes other new features, including the ability to modify the player’s mouse pointer and the implementation of a simplified shader management system. The update also brings a “Beginner Tutorial,” accessible directly from within the program, which as the name suggests is designed to give first-time users a tour of Bakin’s functionalities and how best to make use of them.
