The first TV anime to be adapted directly from an adult doujinshi has been announced, and even the original author was surprised

The Lonely Snow Widow and the Cursed Ring's upcoming anime adaptation will be the first TV anime directly made off an adult doujinshi, according to the creators.

A TV anime adaptation of the adult doujinshi (independently published comic) The Lonely Snow Widow and the Cursed Ring was announced on May 29. According to the creators, this appears to be the first instance of an R-rated doujinshi being directly adapted into a TV anime, without prior commercialization through a publisher.

The Lonely Snow Widow and the Cursed Ring is an original doujinshi series penned by Puuna Puuzaki, first published in 2021. The story is an awkward romantic comedy that follows Takahashi, a man who suddenly inherits an apartment building inhabited exclusively by yokai (supernatural beings) from his father. One day, the protagonist meets Yukino, who is a type of yokai known as a Snow Woman (JP: yuki onna), and the two are immediately drawn to each other. However, they end up having a small argument, which leads them to drift apart.

Desperate to repair the relationship, the protagonist stumbles upon a ring that grants the ability to control the minds of yokai. Now possessing immense power, he is faced with the dilemma of whether to use the ring to mend his relationship with Yukino or to satisfy his own desires.

Following the announcement of the Snow Widow’s anime adaptation, author Puuzaki commented, “I’m sure many of you are looking at this and going ‘Wait, a TV anime? Not an OVA??’ but I’m the one who’s most surprised here. I think the fact that this title has made it this far is all thanks to your support.”

While the anime will come with some differences compared to the original story, Puuzaki says they were involved in supervising the adaptation down to the smallest details, and are very satisfied with how the production is coming along. The airing date is TBA, with further updates due to be shared via the title’s official X account
