Dissolution of My Self, a dark boys love (BL) visual novel developed by Pop Elephant Studio, is out for Windows (Steam) as of September 4. To commemorate its release, the game will be available at a 10% discount for the next two weeks. Dissolution of My Self is voiced in Japanese, with text support for English, Japanese, and Simplified Chinese.
The game follows Hector, a prince of a fallen kingdom who goes into exile with his uncle and aide-de-camp Matvey. Forced to live in a rented room until things die down, Hector decides to peel away at his memories and forget everything.
Gameplay involves interacting with objects found throughout the rented room to trigger memories that Hector is afraid to face. Once you’ve experienced a memory, Hector forgets about it forever, and the object associated with it slowly blurs and loses its function. The order in which you interact with objects affects the pacing and presentation of the story, but it does not affect the ending.
Matvey also plays an important part in Hector’s memories. Aside from being his biological uncle and consultant, Hector treats Matvey as his mother, wife, caretaker, and subject all rolled into one. As you delve into Hector’s memories, you see just how complicated and distorted their relationship is. While the developers do not recommend playing the game in public, it isn’t an eroge. However, players are still warned for sensitive themes like violence, self-harm, and psychological manipulation.
Dissolution of My Self is about introspection and “dissolving” a person with your own hands. In addition to the BL elements, the game is full of dark humor and what the developers call “jokes straight from hell.” If you’re looking to play the game, the devs kindly ask that story discussions be marked with a spoiler warning. Likewise, uploads of full playthroughs are discouraged until September 17, roughly two weeks after launch.
