Publisher EXNOA, who owns DMM Games, recently revealed that their free-to-play RPG Dot Abyss had reached over 200,000 pre-registrations, only 5 days after the title’s official announcement on April 14. Developed as the debut title by Kumasan Black, a brand-new sub-division of the company’s Studio Kumasan, the video game merges SNES-inspired retro graphics with bishojo game elements, but with a rather risqué twist.
As Kumasan Black’s representative director Yudai Hasegawa revealed in an interview with Famitsu, while they do go on adventures and battle alongside the protagonist, all of the heroines in Dot Abyss are, to put it bluntly, brothel workers (if playing the R-rated version). And yes, the game does include “intense bedroom scenes.”
Dot Abyss’ core gameplay loop centers around hack-and-slash combat elements and treasure hunt-style item collection. Players set out to explore the depths of the “Great Hole,” a massive hole at the center of the world, and defend their frontline bases from deadly “calamities” that emerge from it. But as Hasegawa notes, the game’s most distinctive feature are the brothels.
“There’s a reason why we chose brothels as our theme. Some characters work there unwillingly, and there are probably opposite cases as well. Like I’ve previously mentioned, Kumasan Black aims to release ‘really edgy’ works, and this is where that edge lies in the case of Dot Abyss. All of the characters work at the brothel for their own reasons, and I wanted to depict another side of that appeal through gritty presentation.”
Like Hasegawa mentioned, the game’s out-of-left-field concept makes sense considering that Kumasan Black was recently established as Studio Kumasan’s “edgy” new label dedicated to making “extremely erotic games.” As for how far their dedication to erotic content goes, Kumasan Black apparently assembled a specialized team for producing and animating the bedroom scenes in Dot Abyss, investing a significant amount of production resources into making a “detailed” final product. That being said, Dot Abyss is set to have an X-rated version as well as an all-ages version,” in which the brothel is replaced with a tavern.
