31-year-old classic action JRPG Terranigma may finally be making a comeback, according to new teaser

Developed by Quintet and published by Enix, Terranigma released in 1995.

A new teaser for the retro gaming showcase event Pixel Arcadia hints at an announcement related to Terranigma, a cult action JRPG released 31 years ago. While details remain unknown at this point, the teaser includes bits of the game’s OST and dialogue and has even prompted a reaction from one of the original developers, causing much excitement among fans.

Terranigma is an action JRPG developed by Quintet and released by Enix in October 1995. The story takes place on an Earth where life and civilization on the world’s surface have been wiped out. The protagonist, Ark, lives in the village of Crysta, located deep beneath the Earth’s surface. One day, Ark opens Pandora’s Box, which had been sealed inside the village, causing its inhabitants to freeze. He then sets out beyond the village in search of a way to save them, eventually reviving life on the surface through his journey.

Alongside Quintet’s Soul Blazer (1992) and Illusion of Gaia (1993), Terranigma is considered by fans to be part of the so-called “Quintet Trilogy.” The game was directed by Tomoyoshi Miyazaki, with music composed by Miyoko Kobayashi and Masanori Hikichi. Yuzo Koshiro (Ys, Etrian Odyssey) also contributed several tracks, while manga artist Kamui Fujiwara (Dragon Quest: Emblem of Roto) handled the character designs.

Pixel Arcadia’s roughly 23-second-long teaser features an arranged version of Terranigma’s “Prayer,” as well as the line, “Wake up! All the living things in the world await your awakening.” This line is originally spoken by Kumari in Chapter 4 of Terranigma. In addition, the credits “©SQUARE ENIX/QUINTET/Kamui Fujiwara” can be seen at the bottom of the video.

While we still don’t know what exactly this announcement is for, it looks like fans can expect some kind of Terranigma-related announcement during Pixel Arcadia. The event itself is positioned as a showcase for modern retro-inspired titles as well as HD remakes of older titles, which has raised fans’ expectations. Kamui Fujiwara himself also reacted to Pixel Arcadia on X, commenting, “All I can say is that I can’t say anything!”

Despite its critical acclaim and enduring popularity, Terranigma has yet to receive a port or remaster, making a comeback long overdue after 31 years.

The Pixel Arcadia showcase will be livestreamed on YouTube and Twitch from 11 AM PT on August 24.
