Square Enix’s Octopath Traveler franchise celebrated its 8-year anniversary in July. Talking to Dengeki Online in a commemorative interview, the series’ core development members, including producer Tomoya Asano, recently addressed Octopath Traveler’s future.
With the 8-year milestone having passed and the 10-year anniversary already in sight, Asano says his team is fully aware that anticipation for an “Octopath Traveler III” is incredibly high. However, somewhat apologetically, he says there is nothing he is able to share at the moment. “We genuinely feel [fans’ expectations], I just wanted to convey that.”
Asano also adds that given how much the scope of the HD-2D style has expanded and the strong performance of Octopath Traveler – which has sold over 7 million units so far – his team strongly feels that it “cannot simply release something half-baked.” He and the rest of the developers agree that “if we’re going to do it, we’re going to push the limits,” suggesting that a potential sequel will be even more ambitious in its scale or concept. They ask fans to “keep looking forward to what comes next.”
On a side note, when it comes to other multimedia developments in the Octopath Traveler series – such as novelizations and the TRPG adaptation – the developers say they’re eager to hear what fans would like to see made, welcoming ideas.
