Suikoden Star Leap devs praised by players in Japan for “god-tier update” only one month after launch

Players were pleased to see almost all of their concerns with the game addressed in a single, massive update scheduled for September.

Suikoden STAR LEAP, the free-to-play revival of Konami’s classic RPG series, has announced major updates to the game’s Japanese version coming in September. According to an in-depth post from the game’s official X account, new features include overhauled UI elements, balance adjustments to item drops and combat, new in-game content, and a multitude of quality-of-life improvements. Updates to the game’s gacha systems are also planned, alongside optimization for those playing on devices with less available RAM.

The hefty list of planned changes represents a major overhaul to the game following its August 6 launch, and players are thrilled to see many of their early criticisms addressed so quickly. “You hardly ever see a dev team that’s so responsive to players’ complaints,” one user observed. “Everything I hoped they’d change has been fixed. Thank you so much!” Another user remarked that other games typically take years of gradual updates to address so many issues, making this rapid update schedule truly shocking.

That’s not to say that player reception was poor at launch. As we reported recently, despite skepticism from long-time fans that STAR LEAP might turn out to be a gacha-driven cash grab capitalizing on nostalgia, audiences were pleasantly surprised by how much it feels like a “real” Suikoden game, with the live-service elements remaining relatively unobtrusive. The story and artwork have received great praise, with many hailing it as a true return for the series following a hiatus that lasted over a decade. The last game in the series was the Japan-only Genso Suikoden: Tsumugareshi Hyakunen no Toki, which released on PSP in 2012, although Suikoden I & II were packaged as a remaster on modern platforms last year.

Konami, alongside the game’s developer Mythril, appear to have followed through on the goodwill they earned from fans following STAR LEAP’s launch in August. Following the update announcement, fans have remarked that Konami seems serious about reviving the Suikoden brand, with some even saying that they’ve raised the bar for mobile games in Japan.

Suikoden STAR LEAP is still only available as a mobile release in Japan at the time of this writing, but the game is slated for a global release in the near future alongside a PC version, the Steam page of which is available here. Hopefully English-speaking players won’t have to wait long to see what Japanese fans have been raving about.
