Nintendo Switch to end X/Twitter integration, but X says relationship with Nintendo is “strong”

Nintendo announced on May 9 that they will be discontinuing X (formerly Twitter) integration for the Nintendo Switch, including the Friend Suggestions feature, starting June 10.

So far, it has been possible to share in-game screenshots and videos taken on the Switch directly to X and Facebook, but from June 10, 2024, the integration for X will be terminated. The linkage with Facebook will remain for the time being, but may be discontinued at a later date according to Nintendo’s announcement. Users will also no longer be able to send friend requests via the Friend Suggestions menu.

Titles such as Splatoon 3 and Splatoon 2 will be directly affected by this change, as players are currently able to post messages from the in-game mailbox to their linked X or Facebook accounts. After X integration with the Switch is discontinued, mailbox posts will no longer be posted to either X or Facebook, but rather to Nintendo’s servers. It will still be possible to save images from the Nintendo Switch Album to your PC or smartphone and then manually share them on social media.

Following X’s announcement of API pricings last year, many companies and platforms have made changes to their X integration features. Yostar have terminated X integration for several of their games, including Arknights. Sony Interactive Entertainment discontinued the X integration function on PS4/PS5 in November 2023, making it no longer possible to share gameplay videos and screenshots directly to X. Xbox took similar measures in April 2023.

In response to Nintendo’s announcement, X has commented that their partnership with Nintendo “remains strong,” and that they plan to continue collaborating.
