Japanese ghost developer Tose takes hit due to cancelled “major project” from overseas. Operating profit down almost 45%

Codenamed "Project D," the title was initially put on hold in February 2026 by the client.

Japanese game developer Tose recently announced its financial results for the third quarter of the fiscal year ending August 2026. According to a GameBiz report, the company saw a significant decline across all profit metrics, with total sales down 0.8% and operating profit down 44.8% year-on-year. The hit to profits has been largely attributed to the cancellation of an unnamed project described in the report as a “large-scale development project for an overseas client.”

Tose (or Tose Software), for context, is a game developer that has built its reputation as a “ghost developer” due to it rarely being credited on the games it works on, typically operating behind the scenes as a contract studio. Since being founded in 1979, the company has pumped out big name franchise entries for Nintendo, Square Enix, Capcom, Atlus and more. Their recent known projects include Tales of Graces f Remastered and Dragon Quest I & II HD-2D Remake.

The cancelled project, dubbed internally as “Project D”, was initially put on hold as early as late February of this year at the behest of the overseas client, resulting in development staff being left idle from March onwards. Additionally, revenue-sharing income, mainly in the first quarter, fell below the previous year’s level, resulting in an operating profit decrease of approximately 45%. As of this writing, it is yet to be determined if “Project D” will resume development.

Tose also reported that the company has not received any compensation from the overseas client for the project’s suspension. In response, Tose is considering rewrites to its contract clauses going forward, requiring a certain level of financial compensation when development processes are halted.

The company is currently working to fill its idle development resources by accelerating the launch and acquisition of new projects, as well as improving staff utilization rates by switching tasks that were planned to be outsourced to in-house development.

Tose currently has five other titles in its pipeline. A new “Project E” was launched in the second quarter, alongside an order for “Project F” in the third quarter by a different clientele. Both mystery projects are described as being multiplatform and in the planning/launch phase, and full revenue contributions are expected from the fiscal year ending August 2027 onwards.
