Gundam SEED FREEDOM ZERO director says the upcoming film brings late wife and SEED writer Chiaki Morosawa’s final screenplay to life after nearly being shelved

Mobile Suit Gundam Seed Freedom Zero is set to premiere in North America in February 2027.

Bandai Namco Filmworks has announced that the Mobile Suit Gundam SEED FREEDOM ZERO anime film is coming to theaters in North America in February 2027, a month following its Japan premiere. A trailer and official website were revealed alongside the announcement.

The screenplay for the film was written by Chiaki Morosawa, who passed away in 2016. Her husband and the film’s director, Mitsuo Fukuda, described it as “the last work my late wife, series composition writer Chiaki Morosawa, completed the script for,” adding that it was created “with twenty years of emotion invested in it” (source: Oricon).

Fukuda explained that, until recently, he had almost given up hope that the project would ever see the light of day, thinking it would ultimately end up shelved. However, thanks to the support of fans, the team has been able to bring the story to life. He expressed hope that audiences would enjoy the story connecting Mobile Suit Gundam SEED DESTINY and Mobile Suit Gundam SEED FREEDOM, as well as the feelings of the characters Morosawa had been determined to portray.

The new film serves as a prequel to Mobile Suit Gundam SEED FREEDOM, which debuted on January 26, 2024. It adapts a scenario developed during the planning stages of the 2024 film by series composition writer Morosawa, co-writer Shigeru Morita, and director Mitsuo Fukuda, following protagonist Shinn Asuka.

After the collapse of the Destiny Plan proposed by Dullindal, which would have decided people’s fates based on genetics, Cagalli, the chief representative of the Orb United Emirates, has been working to bring about a peaceful new order by establishing a global peace monitoring agency called COMPS (Compass).

In C.E.74, the great war is over, but Shinn has yet to decide what course he should follow. Then a mobile suit which has survived many past battlefields is transferred from ZAFT to COMPS’s temporary base on Onogoro Island. That night, however, the Strike Freedom Gundam is stolen by persons unknown. To stop the situation from escalating, to recover the stolen machine, and for the sake of everything they must protect, Shinn and his comrades once again throw themselves into battle.
