GUNDAM ROGUE ORBIT, the latest game in Bandai Namco’s Mobile Suit Gundam series, is set to launch on March 5, 2027 for PC (Steam), PS5, and Xbox Series X|S. This high-speed action game is part of the new Gundam universe titled “RG Project” (alongside the upcoming XARX-Zero anime) and it does quite a bit of mold-breaking when it comes to the franchise’s conventions.
Chief among them is the fact that Rogue Orbit pits humanity against an unknown adversary known as The Apocalypse, rather than depicting a war between humans. Talking to ThisIsGame in a recent interview, producer Yuya Tomiyama and director Yoshiyuki Serizawa explained the ideas behind some of these decisions.
According to Serizawa, given the nature of the Gundam franchise – which approaches its 50th anniversary in 2029 – the sheer volume of existing animated Gundam works has made it increasingly difficult to attract newcomers to the series. Hoping to overcome that barrier, the developers chose the action genre and strove for a straightforward premise in Rogue Orbit, depicting a fight against enemies much larger than the Gundam.
This approach is also what influenced Rogue Orbit’s graphics, which lean towards a photorealistic style rather than an anime style. By opting for realism and a high level of detail, the developers hope to appeal not only to existing Gundam fans, but to people who just love action games in general. Additionally, Serizawa adds, “We determined that photorealistic graphics were the best fit for maximizing Gundam’s distinctive sci-fi identity, the metallic texture of the mechs, and the texture of the silicon-based life forms that make up The Apocalypse.”

That being said, the developers are confident that Gundam Rogue Orbit maintains the human drama Gundam is known for, as Tomiyama explains: “I believe the core elements that make up Gundam are war, mobile suits, and human drama. In this game, the war has been reimagined as a struggle for the survival of all of humanity rather than a conflict between ideologies, but we’ve preserved the essence of the mobile suit action and human drama.”
According to the developers, the story will delve deeply into protagonist Re-X and his growth as a pilot, with the player fully immersed into the role through first-person cockpit scenes.
GUNDAM ROGUE ORBIT is scheduled to launch on March 5, 2027 for PC (Steam), PlayStation 5, and Xbox Series X|S.
