Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth’s 6GB update makes Mithril Mine easier to navigate

Square Enix released the version 1.020 update for Final Fantasy VII Rebirth on March 21. The sizable patch of 5.77GB makes numerous bug corrections and performance-related improvements.

Chief among the updates are adjustments to the difficulty of FFVII Rebirth’s mini games “Fort Condor” and “Gears and Gambits,” which are considered to be particularly difficult among players. While lowering the difficulty of the game itself affected the mini games, they remained quite challenging even at the tutorial stage, which is likely why difficulty settings have been added to their customization screens.

The latest FFVII Rebirth update also includes enhanced visual guidance for Mithril Mine, a dungeon players visit early in the game. The latter portion of this dungeon requires you to climb some ivy, but many players reported getting stuck at this point, unable to tell where the path is against the environment. I visited this spot in-game and found that the color of the ivy has been significantly emphasized. Perhaps another form of guidance support will be available for players visiting the location for the first time.

Overall, the latest FFVII Rebirth update seems to tackle a lot of points players have been voicing dissatisfactions about. Full patch notes below: (translation via Gematsu):

  • Fixed typos and omissions in some text.
  • Fixed a bug that occurred on the map under certain conditions when controlling a character.
  • Fixed a bug in battle in which Red XIII’s abilities “Lunatic High” and “Watcher’s Spirit” could be easily canceled.
  • Fixed a bug in battle in which enemies would stop moving under certain conditions.
  • Fixed a progress bug that occurred during quests under certain conditions.
  • Improved frame rate and overall game stability.
  • Added “Sharp” and “Soft” options to the Performance Mode display settings.
  • Improved the graphics quality.
  • The camera’s reverse setting is now applied when controlling a gliding Chocobo.
  • The camera’s reverse setting is now applied to the sharpshooting mini-game camera.
  • Enhanced guidance support while climbing the ivy in the “Mythril Mine” location.
  • Added difficulty settings to the customization screens for the mini-games “Fort Condor” and “Gears and Gambits.”

Additionally, this update includes performance mode adjustments and graphics-related improvements, which director Naoki Hamaguchi previously mentioned that he wanted to address.

Final Fantasy VII Rebirth is available for the PS5.

  1. The real reason behind Mithril Mine is due to Unreal Engine itself, while yes it does have excellent rendering of realistic visuals, those realistic visuals can often be a hindrance when it comes visual cues, like for example to traversal of mountains, examining certain objects, which objects can be climbed etc because all objects blend together too easily and people become lost visually. This is why Yellow Paint is in these games or even the fact in one of the mountain levels the textures had to be painted an off color to indicate that they can be climbed.

While Unreal Engine is not a bad system, i am hoping Square Enix can pull a Capcom and make at least a game engine of their own or at least two, one for AAA/AA and another for an MMO that can scale to from Mobile up to PC and Console. It feels like Square Enix keeps running into creative limitations and things they have to keep fixing to make everything work over time. It would help for them to spend money and to try to make it work again.
