Doomed Otaku, a dark comedy about an impulsive otaku girl who embezzles $5,000 in fan money, launches on Steam with “Very Positive” rating
The game features visual novel-style story sections and top-down gameplay.

South Korean indie dev KiwiSaurus’ twisted parody of the dark side of online fan culture, Doomed Otaku, was released via Steam on October 16. The game has since earned a “Very Positive” rating on the platform, with 97% of reviews being positive.
Blending visual novel-style story sequences with top-down adventure gameplay, the game follows the life of hardcore otaku Jin Da-yeon, a mega fan of the fictional Japanese game Idol☆Star. Upon learning that a series of limited-edition perfumes themed around the game’s characters are set to be released in Japan, Da-yeon collects $5,000 from like-minded fans online with the intent of placing a bulk import order and distributing the perfumes accordingly. Unfortunately, her lack of impulse control causes her to blow the entire fund on personal expenses, and she now has a scant 14-days to earn back the money before the order deadline by whatever means necessary.

Doomed Otaku’s satirical take on South Korean geek subculture takes a two-pronged approach. The real-world setting depicted as a monochromatic, dreary, somewhat mysterious place that demands Social Points (SP) for Da-yeon to navigate. Meanwhile, the online world of the internet is depicted as a candy-colored fever dream, full of wacky characters and unpredictable happenings. It’s up to the player how to split Da-yeon’s time between these two worlds, as both provide ample opportunities for fundraising and interactions with the game’s diverse supporting cast that can send the story spiraling in any number of unexpected directions.
Developer KiwiSaurus notes that Doomed Otaku’s massive story and expressive artwork was created entirely by hand, with absolutely no usage of generative AI in the creative process – although some AI-powered assistance was used for programming, all final work was thoroughly reviewed by human developers. The game features a script of approximately 400,000 characters, complemented by 141 original CGs and 400 unique standing character portraits.

With over 20 possible endings, Doomed Otaku is designed to keep players engaged over multiple playthroughs, with an estimated play time of 15 hours to reach the true ending. Those who wish to earn all 42 of the game’s achievements for 100% completion can expect nearly double that estimate, as thoroughly exploring this title’s myriad rabbit holes can take up to 30 hours.
The game’s soundtrack, featuring 76 original compositions, is also available for separate purchase via Steam.
Doomed Otaku is available now on PC (Steam), with a free playable demo also offered via Itch.io.
