Production I.G and Studio Khara have officially announced Cosmoship Yamato √2199, a new feature-length anime film in the Space Battleship Yamato series. This is the first joint anime production between the two studios, with Evangelion series creator Hideaki Anno serving as director, planner, and executive producer. Acclaimed mecha designer Yutaka Izubuchi serves as co-director.

Alongside the announcement, an official website, X account, and teaser artwork for the film were revealed. The image depicts the silhouette of Yamato preparing to launch into space against a devastated landscape. According to Oricon, work on the project began in 2024, with Anno briefly announcing that he was involved in a new title in the Space Battleship Yamato series. While information on the anime remains largely under wraps, it’s set to take on a different direction from previous remake titles.

Commenting on the production, Anno – who has loved the series since his school days – said: “We’re not just making this to fulfill our childhood dreams, we want to create a Yamato that embodies our prayers and wishes for both the next generation and our own. That’s the spirit in which we’re producing this film.”

Cosmoship Yamato √2199 is currently in production. The release date is TBD.
