In The Dream of a Cockspur, you assume the role of a researcher whose team spends two weeks studying the mysterious fallen object on the island without a hitch. However, things go awry when it turns out their ship, the only way home, breaks down. Left stranded on the island, unexplainable things start to happen, and you have to figure out if someone is sabotaging the mission, or if, perhaps, a hidden horror lurks upon the island.

Players will come to learn about their circumstances as they interact with their surroundings. Discovering new objects grants new character choices and perspectives, as the player’s identity itself and their relationship with the world are left a mystery. In the midst of uncertainty, a therapy dog named Numnum grants comfort to the weary protagonist.

The developer, roccay, originally majored in molecular cell systems and pathology, and has released several minigames on itch.io in the past. The Dream of Cockspur marks their first feature-length rekease. The unique visuals seen in the trailer are influenced by surrealist works, stop-motion animation using clay, and plaster objects. According to roccay, the trailer’s depiction of the ship cracking open was first made in 3D, but was then swapped out in favor of clay after they found the initial attempt inadequate. They also mentioned how the 40-color clay set they purchased to make the stop-motion animations ended up being the most expensive part of development.
