Developed by DeskWorks and set to release this Fall, Chronoscript: The Endless End is a hand-drawn Metroidvania title that has you exploring the 2D-illustrated manuscript worlds created by the Vampire Author who owns the estate. It was recently announced that Bayonetta character designer Mari Shimazaki and Chrono Trigger and Xenogears composer Yasunori Mitsuda will be lending their talents to the project.
While Shimazaki has worked on multiple titles, including Okami, Pokémon Scarlet, Tekken 7 and 8, and No More Heroes III, arguably her most well-known contribution is providing the character designs for the Bayonetta franchise. She is responsible for the 3D character designs and is the character modeling director for Chronoscript.

Given that a lot of Chronoscript’s appeal comes from its hand-drawn 2D designs and backgrounds, she made sure to convey each of the characters’ personalities through their 3D designs rather than focus on realism. As a result, their designs and sculptural details show “glimpses of their true selves,” which Shimazaki hopes players will grow attached to as they play.
It wouldn’t be a Metroidvania title without memorable music. Thankfully, Yasunori Mitsuda (Chrono Cross, Chrono Trigger, Xenogears, Xenoblade Chronicles) is leading a team of four composers, including himself, Shunsuke Tsuchiya, Mariam Abounnasr, and Manami Kiyota to compose the game’s soundtrack.
Despite Chronoscript being the first Metroidvania title he has worked on, Mitsuda says he has been a huge fan of the genre since the late 2000s. By drawing on the game’s unique world and the genre’s themes of adventure and growth, he believes that the music will provide players with “a sense of discovery and excitement.”
Chronoscript: The Endless End is a Metroidvania-style adventure game where you play as the Editor, a successful writer who is summoned to a mysterious estate following the conclusion of his long-running series. After being bitten by a mosquito and getting knocked unconscious, you wake up inside the Vampire Author’s manuscript. With no other way out, you explore the manuscript and fight against twisted remnants of the dead known as the Ruined in hopes of escaping. While the unique art style makes it look appealing to everyone, DeskWorks promises that this is a game with a steep difficulty curve made for fans of the genre.
Chronoscript: The Endless End is set to release this Fall on Windows (Steam) and PlayStation 5.
