In a Tokyo Game Show 2026 interview with INVEN, studio Gust producer Junzo Hosoi has said that, if it were up to him, he would like to push the size of Atelier Karia heroine Karia’s belly “as far as possible.” However, he stressed that the final specifications for her body shape transformation system have yet to be decided, with the team paying close attention to player feedback as they work on the game.
Atelier Karia: The Night Kingdom & the Guide of Memories is the latest mainline entry in the Atelier JRPG series, scheduled to launch on February 25, 2027. The game introduces Karia, a new protagonist whose voracious appetite is closely tied to exploration, combat, and synthesis.
Karia possesses the ability to eat anything, ranging from actual food to synthesized items and even bombs. What she consumes can affect both her appearance and abilities, with Gust previously revealing that the game features more than 100 possible eating-related transformations. One of the more vigorously discussed aspects of the game is a potential system that would allow Karia to become visibly plumper or slimmer depending on how much she eats. During a month-long survey conducted between July and August, Gust asked players how they would feel about the feature, providing provisional concept art of Karia’s new, slightly chubbier form.

The overwhelming response on social media and interim results of the survey showed that players were tremendously on board with the system being implemented, with the devs subsequently implying that development work on the feature was already underway (although they stopped short of formally confirming the details)
Meanwhile, speaking to INVEN, Hosoi was asked whether Karia would develop a distinctive physical feature like previous Atelier heroines. While Ryza is famously associated with her thighs and Yumia with her legs, Hosoi had a different answer for Karia. “Her belly. As for how big it will get… personally, I’d like to push it as far as possible, but it hasn’t been finalized yet,” he said. Commenting on the body transformation system in a broader sense, Hosoi explained that Gust had been paying attention to Karia’s body shape changes since relatively early in development, given that “changing through eating” is a core part of the game. He added that the team is continuing to refine the system based on feedback from different sources, noting that he is aware that perceptions of what makes a character appealing can vary from person to person.

While a lot of are surely interested in seeing what Hosoi’s preferred maximum belly size would have looked like, it looks like the team is looking for a middle ground that will satisfy players. The survey conducted by the developers also mentioned potential features like the ability to lock Karia into a preferred body type, which was likewise a popular option.
Atelier Karia: The Night Kingdom & the Guide of Memories is scheduled to release on February 25, 2027 for PC (Steam), PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S, and Nintendo Switch 2.
