Final Fantasy VII Rebirth: new “odd job” quest system revealed, but more importantly, Aerith yeets a barrel

Square Enix revealed a new feature in Final Fantasy VII Rebirth on October 19. The game will introduce “odd job” quests, which are briefly shown in a video posted on the official X/Twitter account. On the other hand, the video also happens to show Aerith knocking around a barrel, and the unintended detail has stolen everyone’s attention from the actual news.

What was unveiled this time around is a new element related to quests. In Final Fantasy VII Rebirth, you will be able to take on odd jobs from people around the world who are in need of a helping hand. The video released on October 19 by the FFVII Rebirth official account shows Cloud going up to a Quest Bulletin Board in town and checking out available quests, such as a quest to help locals get rid of monsters preying on their livestock. In the background, a touching arrangement of On our way plays. However, the behavior of Aerith, who is “caught on camera” knocking about a barrel, seems to be the most popular detail among fans.

In the video, as Cloud steps up in front of the quest board, the other party members follow behind him. Just before the quest board screen opens, a mysterious “thud” can be heard. After the noise, a rolling barrel and Aerith appear in the corner of the screen. The party includes both Red XIII and Aerith, so it’s unclear who the culprit is, but one of them definitely had some beef going on with the barrel. The chaotic barrel action seems to have taken the spotlight entirely, as users comment how they “weren’t able to take in either the new features or the music.”

Post translation: I was so engrossed with Aerith launching that barrel I didn’t have a single thought to spare for the new system

The previous title, Final Fantasy VII Remake, also had certain objects get yeeted the moment a character collides with them, and barrels being sent flying by NPCs is nothing new. But still, Aerith’s antics in the demo video are quite unexpectedly funny. Aerith does have a tomboyish spirit, so maybe there could be some message behind the video?

Final Fantasy VII Rebirth is scheduled for release on February 2, 2024 for the PS5. Preorders are open.
