Pokémon Scarlet and Violet get major QoL updates: mini map can be locked to north, Boxes load faster

The Pokémon Company released the Ver. 2.0.1 update for Pokémon Scarlet and Violet on September 12, which includes the release of “The Hidden Treasure of Area Zero Part 1: The Teal Mask” for users who have purchased the DLC. The update also includes plenty of new features and fixes that will come as good news to players regardless of whether they have purchased the DLC, including improvements in navigation and fixes related to the loading time of Boxes.

In the update to Pokémon Scarlet and Violet this time around, one major point is that you can now lock the mini map so that “up” is always north. Though the latest Pokémon titles’ selling point is the vast open world and spacious game field, the mini map had always been kind of unwieldy, largely owing to the fact that it could not be fixed so that up is always north. Now, you can do so by pressing the Right Stick twice while you have the map app open and selecting the ‘App and mini maps locked setting.’ Additionally, the update also brings new camera settings (accessed from the Options menu) which allow you to adjust how the camera works while out in the field.

Another handy function the update introduces is the possibility to signal the Pokémon accompanying you to stop and wait where it is. This signal can be made by pressing the Left Stick. Anyone who’s tried to take a nice picture in-game has likely dealt with the frustration of Pokémon refusing to stay put and following after you – this problem has now likely been resolved.

Pokémon Scarlet and Violet feature the possibility of storing Pokémon into Boxes, but there had been continuous reports of the Boxes being sluggish in their loading time, making browsing through Pokémon feel choppy. Furthermore, this problem was amplified by the volume of Pokémon stored, so the closer you were to the maximum 960 Pokémon, the more this lag was felt.

It would appear that the new update tackles this issue, as the patch notes say “we have made adjustments to the way Pokémon icons are displayed in the Boxes.” And indeed, upon comparing how the Boxes act in Ver 1.3.2 and the latest Ver. 2.0.1, the improvement can be felt immediately, and browsing feels a lot more comfortable.

Pokémon Scarlet and Violet is available for the Nintendo Switch. The “Part 1: The Teal Mask” DLC was released on September 12.
