Westernpunk RPG Armed Fantasia announced by Wild Arms creator
Wild Bunch Productions has announced Armed Fantasia. Supported platforms will depend on the success of its Kickstarter campaign, but the development team states they want to release it on all major platforms. The game was announced alongside Penny Blood, and the two games will seek funding together in a “Double Kickstarter” campaign that is scheduled to begin on August 29, 2022.
Armed Fantasia is a Westernpunk RPG that combines the aesthetic of the American West with magic, monsters called Anomalies, and long-lost cultures. Adventurers in this world use what are called ARMs (Aether Reaction Maximizer) to weaponize their magical power against Anomalies. Players will take on the role of Ingram, an ARM wielding Pathfinder, who sets off with two companions to explore the ravaged world of Londenium while uncovering its secrets along the way.
Armed Fantasia features a vast world map where players will dash, jump, and use each party member’s unique “Gadget” item to traverse land, sea, and air. Dungeon exploration focuses on utilizing these Gadgets to solve obstacles and says players will need to use their wits to find treasure and survive in one piece.
Battles in Armed Fantasia will be turn-based and use a system they have dubbed Cross Order Tactics, where “successive character actions play a key role in the Chain Order.” There are also Force Breaks which interrupt enemy turn order with timing-based reactions. These two concepts look like they will combine to bring elements of strategy and split-second decision making into battles.
The Western setting and use of the word “ARM” probably brings the Wild Arms series to mind for many gamers. And as you may have imagined, development for Armed Fantasia is being led by Wild Arms game designer and scenario writer Akifumi Kaneko. In recent years, Kaneko has worked on anime such as Symphogear but is now making a long-awaited return to games.
Character designs are being handled by Tomomi Sasaki with music by Michiko Naruke and Noriyasu Uematsu’s Elements Garden, also veterans of the Wild Arms series. For Wild Arms fans, this is surely a highly anticipated reunion.
As mentioned earlier, the game is seeking crowdfunding in a Double Kickstarter campaign with a horror themed JRPG called Penny Blood where support for one will be tied to support for the other. The campaign will have a variety of backer rewards and supported platforms will depend on how much backing the games receive.
Both Armed Fantasia and Penny Blood share a mutual minimum goal of $750,000 which will fund both projects, so we’ll be keeping an eye out to see if it reaches at least that level of support. There’s also a planned social media campaign that will span both titles and trigger updates to backer rewards as goals are achieved. The Double Kickstarter campaign is scheduled to launch on August 29.
