Nintendo has released its latest quarterly earnings report on February 3 and mentioned that Animal Crossing: New Horizons is now the best-selling video game of all time in Japan as a single title. Note that Nintendo is talking about the sales numbers within Japan and not the worldwide sales.

Animal Crossing: New Horizons sold over 10 million units in Japan alone, far surpassing the previous record of 6.81 million set by the 1985 title Super Mario Bros. New Horizons’ cumulative sales number is 37.62 million, just behind Mario Kart 8 Deluxe (43.35 million units). Speaking of which, Mario Kart 8 Deluxe was released in 2017 but still doing well, selling 7.96 million more units between April and December of 2021.

New Horizons was released in March of 2020 for the Nintendo Switch and gained massive popularity immediately after its launch, selling 32.63 million copies in its first year. Sales have increased further over the past nine months, reaching a total of 37.62 million units.

The earnings report highlights the impressive numbers accumulated by both Animal Crossing: New Horizons and Mario Kart 8 Deluxe.

Incidentally, the Nintendo Switch hardware has sold 103.54 million units worldwide.
