Aniplex and Sega announced that the total worldwide shipments (including digital sales) for Demon Slayer -Kimetsu no Yaiba- The Hinokami Chronicles surpassed one million units. The game recently launched for PS4, PS5, Xbox One, Xbox Series X|S, and PC (via Steam) on October 14 in Asia, and on October 15 in North America/Europe.

The Hinokami Chronicles is a videogame adaptation of the hit manga/anime series Demon Slayer -Kimetsu no Yaiba-. The game is published by Aniplex in Japan, and by Sega in Asia, Europe, and North America. CyberConnect2, the company behind numerous videogame adaptations of Jump manga IPs, handled the development. It is made in Unreal Engine 4.

The game includes single-player Adventure Mode and online/offline Versus Mode. The Adventure Mode lets you relive the anime’s story as Tanjiro. This mode includes episodes from season 1 to the movie Mugen Train. In Versus Mode, you get to play as your favorite characters in 2 vs 2 matchups with up to 2 players. Since the game is based on the anime series, and not the manga, available characters are limited. However, a couple of characters including Rui and Akaza had been added via updates.

Famitsu’s game software sales ranking (which mainly covers physical editions) for the week ending October 17, reported that the PS4 version of the game sold 94,849 units in Japan. The game debuted at No.11 on the UK boxed retail charts for the week ending October 16, which is not a bad start. The Steam user review status is “Very Positive” with over 3,000 reviews submitted at the time of this writing. Out of those 3,000 reviews, only around 1% are Japanese, indicating that it has been well received internationally.

The movie Mugen Train was a box-office hit in Japan, and was reportedly successful overseas as well (Yahoo News). The global popularity of the IP may have been a contributing factor for the game’s sales so far.

Demon Slayer -Kimetsu no Yaiba- The Hinokami Chronicles is currently available for PS4, PS5, Xbox One, Xbox Series X|S, and PC (via Steam).
