We are currently accepting applications for the position of full-time editor for the video game news site AUTOMATON WEST.
What is AUTOMATON WEST?
AUTOMATON WEST is a site that focuses on Japanese content including video games, manga and anime. The site is operated by Active Gaming Media, Inc. based in Osaka, Japan. It was launched as the official English arm of AUTOMATON, a major Japanese gaming site. With AUTOMATON WEST’s recent growth in readership, we are looking to expand our editorial team.
What kind of candidate are we looking for?
The main duties of editorial staff include discovering unique and meaningful content for news items and writing news articles in English, as well as editing manuscripts and translations by staff. An editor is responsible not only for proofreading, but making sure stories are factual, logically presented, and relevant to the site and its readers.
We are looking for a native or native-level English speaker who is able to write quickly and with ease. A high understanding of nuance in written Japanese, as well as the ability to communicate in Japanese in person is required. Since the site primarily focuses on Japanese content, the candidate must be able to peruse Japanese sources with ease. JLPT certification of level N2 or N1 is required.
Overseas applicants are eligible to apply, but the availability to relocate to Japan is required. In this case, we will provide support for obtaining a work visa.
We are looking for an individual who loves and is knowledgeable about Japanese content such as video games and anime, and is immersed in internet/social media culture and the interests of otaku.
Prior experience as a writer and/or editor is desirable.
Form of employment
Position: Editor (Note that in some cases, the arrangement may start from a trial contract of several months before transitioning to full-time employment)
Location: Active Gaming Media, Inc., Osaka Office (Matsumoto Sangyo Bldg. 7th floor, 1-12-6 Utsubohonmachi, Nishi ward, Osaka City)
Salary: To be negotiated on an individual basis based on ability and experience, with the standard ranging from 250,000 to 400,000 JPY/month (Note that salary is based on Japanese/Osaka standards for employees in 20s/30s.)
Work hours: Flexible. The standard workdays are Monday through Friday, which can be adjusted based on the individual’s preference

- Holidays: Saturdays and Sundays, national holidays, year-end and New Year’s holidays

- Commute expenses: Fully paid (up to the cost of one month’s commuter pass)

If you have any samples to demonstrate your language/writing/editorial skills such as blog posts etc., please include them. - Candidates who pass the document screening from step 1. will proceed to the second step of the selection process which consists of writing a test article and translation. Please note that no manuscript fees will be paid, and provided manuscripts will not be used for any purpose other than the selection process.
Results of the first screening will be communicated only to candidates who pass.
- Based on test results, we will conduct an online interview (one or two). The interview will be conducted in both English and Japanese.
