Sega to increase the average monthly salary of its employees by 30%

Sega has announced that it will be increasing the average monthly salary of its employees by approximately 30% from July 1, 2023. The initial salary for university graduates will be increased by approximately 35%, rising from 222,000 yen (around $1,649) to 300,000 yen (around $2,228) per month.

The company explained that the reason behind the pay increase is “to invest in human resources in order to further stabilize employee income and create a more comfortable working environment, as well as to further strengthen its global competitiveness.”

This raise in pay is not just a simple increase to the base salary of its employees. Sega noted that the increase in average monthly salary will be achieved by both raising the base salary and increasing the ratio of base salary within annual salary by incorporating part of the bonuses. Under this new system, the average increase rate is approximately 15% on an annual salary basis. Another factor that affects the increase rate was also mentioned: “We plan to introduce an advance payment system for retirement allowances (selective system), and the rate of increase will differ depending on this option.”

Various game companies in Japan have recently increased their base salaries in order to acquire talented employees, but most of them don’t mention the impact on the “annual” salary. With its announcement, Sega is likely attempting to ensure transparency by explaining the process by which it will be increasing the base pay of its employees.
