Sonic Powered has announced that Japanese Rail Sim: Journey to Kyoto will be coming to Steam on June 23.

Japanese Rail Sim: Journey to Kyoto is the latest title in Sonic Powered’s Japanese Rail Sim series. Players are tasked with driving a train through Japan, with each game in the series set in a different region. By operating a train through these places, players are given the opportunity to experience the enjoyment of a journey in Japan. Featuring Full HD live action footage and information regarding tourist spots and other points of interest along the way, playing the game is somewhat like going on a virtual trip.

The game is based around the Eizan Electric Railway, which runs through the city of Kyoto and even to beautiful mountainous areas. There is abundant nature along the line, and it is famous for the vibrant colors of its maple leaves in the fall. The game has previously been released on the Nintendo Switch in 2019 and on PS4 in 2020, but it is now being ported to Steam.

The Steam version will feature the option to play with a keyboard and mouse in addition to full controller support. The game features three screen size settings: 1280×720, 1920×1080, and a borderless full screen mode. Steam trading cards and badges are also supported, and the game can be played in English or Japanese.

Journey to Kyoto marks the first game from the series to be released on Steam, with most games having been released for the Nintendo 3DS or the Switch. It’s possible that the existence of a PS4 port of the game made it easier to also bring the game to PC.

There are a number of train simulation games available on Steam, but this title places more of an emphasis on the feeling of a journey rather than it does on the particulars of train operation. Japanese Rail Sim: Journey to Kyoto adds yet another option for Steam users with a love of trains, travel, or both.

The Steam page for Japanese Rail Sim: Journey to Kyoto can be found here.
