In the US, the movie shot up the box office chart when it came out on December 22- holding the number one spot for its opening weekend and netting 62 million dollars. The movie was released a week later in Japan on December 27 under the title “Sonic x Shadow Tokyo Mission.” In its first 3 days, it earned 69 million yen (approx. $437,557 USD) and was watched by over 48,000 movie theater-goers. In Japan alone as of January 5 (its tenth day of release), it has already grossed 153% more than the first Sonic movie.
On a global scale, Sonic the Hedgehog 3 is continuing to rack up cumulative worldwide box-office earnings, which currently stand at upwards of $279 million. It seems that Sega’s global transmedia strategy for growing their IPs is going very well for Sonic.
