New “Nippon Anime Awards” aim to become the Academy Awards of Japanese animation, with a shift to valuing creators
The Association of Japanese Animations recently announced its brand-new animation awards event "Nippon Anime Awards."

The Association of Japanese Animations (AJA) held its one-time special event “Tokyo Anime Next” from October 30 to November 2 in Ikebukuro. During the event’s grand finale, the association unveiled the details of Nippon Anime Awards, a brand-new animation awards program scheduled to have its inaugural ceremony on November 21, 2027, at SGC Hall Ariake in Tokyo.
According to Akira Shimizu, the director of AJA and CEO of A-1 Pictures, the new awards program started as an idea to revamp the Tokyo Anime Award Festival (TAAF), which ran from 2014 to 2026. “As we were discussing the matter with studio executives, opinions like ‘It would better to have an award that puts creators in the spotlight,’ and ‘Creators should have a place where they can be celebrated’ frequently arose,” he says. This led to the decision to establish a new award event that would specifically focus on creators (source: RealSound).
The Academy Awards were cited as one goal that could help fulfill such expectations. Anime producer Yuichiro Saito, who himself is a member of the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences, noted that “an award program is more than just a race for prizes,” suggesting that the importance of such event lies in creating a forum where industry professionals can establish and uphold core values, while devising a way to carry those values into the future.
As RealSound writes, the idea to make a creator-oriented anime award program will allow individuals who drive Japan’s anime scene to get industry-wide recognition, fostering an atmosphere in which creators will have stronger motivation to pursue their work. Furthermore, this kind of approach will help the industry create a space for conversation, where professionals can raise awareness about certain issues and think about the steps necessary to prepare for the future.
As Tokyo Anime Next wrapped up, Shimizu expressed the desire to turn the Nippon Anime Awards into something that up-and-coming creators in the anime industry would aspire to win. So far, the TAAF has awarded two grand prizes per year – one for anime films and one for TV anime series, with awards like Best Director, Best Screenplay, Best Art Direction, etc. honoring individual creators. While the award categories for Nippon Anime Awards are still under wraps, it will be interesting to see how the “creator-focused” approach will help uplift the industry compared to its predecessor.
